Packing for Alt Summit in a Carry-on Bag

Packing tips, Travel tips

Ever since my study abroad experience in Spain, where I packed the maximum allowed weight into two giant suitcases – and then had to lug them up flights of stairs by myself in the Metro – I vowed I’d learn the art of light packing. Which is why I insist on packing everything I need into my trusty carry-on bag. Even when I’m headed to a creative conference like Alt Summit where people bring their best selves to their outfits in a big way.

In a few days, I’ll be hopping on a plane to Palm Springs as an official videographer for Alt Summit, so my suitcase will have more memory cards than statement necklaces. 2014 was my first time attending the conference, and I made the fun stop-motion video above for my blog, so I thought I’d share it again. One, because my video skills have come a long way and it’s fun to remember where you started. Evergreen Lane Productions was less than a year old! Two, because look at that cute kitten of mine! Three, because it’s still relevant to how I pack today.

I’ll be using the tips from Tuesday’s blog post on what to wear for a video shoot in case I need to hop in front of the camera. But these outfits also have to be super comfortable as I work behind the camera all day.

Packing Tips for a Creative Conference

Here’s my advice for packing light even when you’re bringing all the bells + whistles:

  1. Choose one neutral. In this suitcase, I was able to get away with two pairs of shoes because all my outfits matched with the same neutral color, gold or tan.
  2. Commit to a plan. I knew exactly what outfits I’d be wearing each day or for each event, which meant I didn’t pack extra “if I feel like it” outfits. Because everything I pack is tried + tested in my wardrobe, I know I enjoy wearing it. So I keep my suitcase light by sticking to the plan.
  3. Depend on accessories. Necklaces, belts, and scarves don’t take up much space in a suitcase but they pack a big visual punch. I’ll be dressing more simply this year since I’m working and also living in an RV (hello, minimalist wardrobe) but adding accessories means I can still have fun with my outfits.

Will I see you at the conference? Pop over to Instagram and say hello!
