Why a simple camera setup is key for small business videos

When it comes to video gear, it’s important to keep it simple. If you buy a complicated set up with gear that takes time to learn and assemble, you’re less likely to actually ever use it. As someone who has lots of fancy cameras thanks to my years as a videographer, I’ve found that I am less likely to sit down and film a quick video if I feel like I have to pull everything out of my gear closet. I’m much more likely to film regularly if my set-up takes me a minimal amount of time to put together – or better yet if I can just use my phone.

How to use your phone camera for small business videos

Speaking of phone cameras, they can actually be a great option for small business videos. Here are some settings to consider when using your phone camera for video:

Turn on airplane mode: This will prevent any calls or notifications from interrupting your filming.

Turn off autofocus: Autofocus can be finicky and cause your camera to constantly refocus, which can be distracting. Instead, tap to focus on the area you want in focus and then turn off autofocus.

Use a tripod: A tripod will help keep your phone steady and eliminate any camera shake. Look for one that allows you to film both horizontal and vertical videos.

Adjust the exposure: You can usually adjust the exposure by tapping on the screen and then sliding your finger up or down. Experiment with this to find the best exposure for your scene.

Tips for lighting your marketing videos

Lighting is another important factor to consider when filming small business videos. If you can, face a window to take advantage of natural light. If you don’t have access to a window, or if the light isn’t ideal, you can use a simple USB ring light to add some extra light to your scene.

The importance of good audio in small business videos

Finally, audio is an area that I recommend investing in. If you have any budget for gear, this is where I recommend putting it. Good audio can make or break whether someone will keep watching your video. Consider investing in a good microphone to ensure that your audio is clear and easy to understand. If you are filming in a room with tile or wood floors, consider putting some blankets or pillows on the floor to muffle some of the echo in your sound. Get the microphone as close to your mouth as possible. It is your choice whether to have your microphone on screen or not – I keep mine just off camera. Find my favorite microphone recommendations on my video gear list page.
