Starting a Travel Journal for Beginners

Starting a travel journal can be overwhelming but it’s an amazing way to document the memories from our adventures! In this post, I’m sharing my favorite tools for making a travel journal. Plus, watch over my shoulder as I create a spread from Redwoods National Park.

Travel Journal Tools I Take on the Road

Because I like to travel light, I only carry a small segment of my travel journaling tools on the road with me. I prefer to pack my schedule with activities when I’m at a destination vs. spending a lot of time writing. So, I carry enough to allow me to follow creative inspiration or write enough notes to jog my memory later when I’m at home working on my journal pages. When starting a travel journal, I recommend you start simple. Then start to add tools + layers as you get more comfortable + familiar with your style. Here’s what I pack with me:

Tombow Mono Twin black pens

Pentel Waterbrush

Zig Watercolor Set (mine is old but this travel set is similar!)

Small journal with watercolor paper

I also like to use my phone to document by taking photos and videos. The 5 Minute Journal app is one of my favorites for keeping track of what I did each day. I write 3-5 bullet points of the highlights, activities + where we stayed.

Travel Journaling Tools I Use at Home

Once I arrive home, I gather the rest of my tools and look at my notes from my trip to help me decide what to include in my travel journal spread. Here are my favorites pens, journals + stickers for travel journaling:

Papermate InkJoy Pens for smooth writing

Tombow Dual Brush Pen for titles + headlines

Zebra Midliners for adding color + fun doodles

Wanderlust Passport is my favorite travel journal!

Instax Mini for printing photos

Tombow Adhesive to attach the photos to my journal pages

Bobo Washi Tape + Craftbelly Washi Tape from two of my favorite woman-owned businesses/artists to add texture + pattern!

Watch the video above to hear me talk through my process for how I use all of the above to lay out my travel page. If you want to see the video that inspired this journal spread, you can watch it here.
