8 Tips for a Travel Mindset (Even At Home!)

Raise your hand if you’ve had to cancel a trip so far in 2020? Me too..5 and counting. We’re all spending more time in our homes these days so today I’m sharing my tips to cultivating a travel mindset even when you’re stuck at home or can’t travel.

One of the guiding philosophies of my life has been Everyday Adventure. It started out at a blog series when I first moved to Colorado in 2008. I had moved to a new place and so at the beginning, it was exciting and new. I was trying new restaurants, getting lost on the way home from work, and finding new trails to hike. After a while, however, I started to get comfortable in my new surroundings. The journey home from work became routine, I’d settled on my staple restaurants, and kept repeating the same favorites. These days the world seems even smaller as it’s pretty much contained within the 4 walls of my apartment.

When I was traveling, however, I looked at things from a different perspective. I soaked up all the details. I didn’t settle for a routine. And I was so much better at being in the moment. Why can’t we have that same perspective while stuck at home?

Here are some of my favorite ways to develop a travel mindset even while stuck at home:

  1. Actually slow down enough to watch the sunset or sunrise
  2. Take an afternoon walk, varying your route each time. Bonus points for leaving the GPS behind and exploring without an agenda – we like to take turns choosing which direction we’ll turn in our neighborhood
  3. Bring your camera to your city’s most photographed spot and try to take a photo that you’ve never seen before
  4. Create a mood at home with a Spotify playlist + cooking a meal from a place you’ve been wanting to visit.
  5. If it’s nice weather, pack a picnic and head to your favorite outdoor spot to enjoy it (this was one of my favorite activities in Europe that I rarely do at home in the US).
  6. Use Duolingo to start learning a new language
  7. Get takeout from a place you’ve never tried before – bonus points for supporting small, local businesses!
  8. Learn the names of local flora + take a nature walk to see if you can spot them

Think about your go-to things to do when you’re on vacation and ask yourself, “Why don’t I ever do this when I’m at home?” There you’ll likely have a perfect candidate for some everyday adventuring. Leave a comment below and let me know what your favorite tip is!
